Not everyone needs a lap lane.
If your priority is weights, cardio, classes or coaching, there are plenty of ways to keep your membership focused on the workout.
Arlington's community fitness centers
Arlington County operates multiple community fitness centers, including Arlington Mill, Barcroft, Fairlington, Gunston, Long Bridge, Lubber Run and Thomas Jefferson. Amenities vary, but generally include cardio equipment, strength equipment, free weights and fitness programming.
CrossFit and specialized training
For more structured workouts, gyms such as Ballston CrossFit and CrossFit Fairfax put coaching and group workouts at the center.
Fairfax County Rec Centers
You can also use Fairfax County's recreation-center system without treating the pool as the main attraction. Members get access to fitness centers, strength equipment, cardio equipment and group classes across participating facilities.
How to choose
Start with your actual workout.
If you lift three days a week, prioritize equipment and proximity. If you prefer classes, look at the schedule. If motivation is the issue, coaching or small-group training may matter more than having the biggest weight room in town.
The best gym is usually the one that makes showing up easy.
